Market Report, "Norway Telecommunications Report Q2 2011", published

New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

March 22, 2011 - PRLog -- BMI's Q2 2011 Norway Telecommunications Report contains the latest forecasts depicting how the country's mobile, fixed-line, broadband, internet and 3G subscriber markets will develop in the five years to 2015. Since our last update, no new data has been published by Norway's network operators or by the country's telecoms sector regulator. Consequently, we left our forecasts unchanged, believing they represent an accurate picture of how Norway's different telecoms market sectors are progressing. Our current forecasts are based on H110 data published by Norway's regulator, the Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority, and Q310 data published by the country's principal network operators, namely the national incumbent operator Telenor and TeliaSonera-backed NetCom.

Based on the available data, BMI estimates Norway had about 5.66mn mobile subscribers at the end of 2010 and a penetration rate of 116%. Despite strong customer growth in the first nine months of 2010, we continue to believe that saturation of the market is close. We expect Norway's network operators to continue emphasising the development of 3G, 3.5G and 4G services as a way of driving future growth.

In the last few months, one of the most interesting developments in Norway's mobile market has been the launch and subsequent development of 4G services based on long-term evolution (LTE) technology. NetCom was the first Norwegian operator to market with LTE mobile services in December 2009. In January 2011 the operator announced a deal with Sweden's Ericsson and Huawei Technologies of China which means the two vendors will deploy a new combined 2G/3G/4G network in Norway. Once the network rollout is complete, 89% of Norway's population have access to 4G and 95% of the population have access to 3G. Meanwhile, in September 2010 Telenor elaborated on its preparations to introduce commercial LTE services. Telenor is aims to create a multi-layered network with 2600MHz LTE base stations in those cities where data demand is high. LTE is designed for transferring large packets of data efficiently, optimising the use of frequencies and realising speeds similar to fixed fibre access over the air. With decreased latency, consumers can access applications such as online high definition (HD) video and networked games while on the move.

Notable developments in the broadband sector include the news in February that Telenor launched a VDSL2 broadband service. The new service, which is offered under the Superbredband banner, provides customers with downlink and uplink speeds of up to 40Mbps and 10Mbps respectively. BMI believes the launch of Telenor's VDSL2 service could help revitalise xDSL growth. In the last few months, xDSL services have been losing out as demand for broadband services based on cable and mobile technology grows at a faster pace. BMI estimates that by the end of 2010 Norway had a broadband penetration rate of 48.7%. This figure reflects fixed and mobile broadband connections.

Norway moved from seventh to fifth position in BMI's updated Business Environment Rankings for Western Europe in Q211. Although its Country Risk rating has dropped slightly this quarter, Norway receives a higher score in the Industry Rewards category. This has lifted its overall score. Despite the higher Industry Rewards, Norway continues to score below the West European average in this category.
