As the country's real GDP begins to recover, by a forecast 2.1% in 2011, we project throughput at the port will also rise. The port's recovery back to pre-downturn levels will, however, be long, and could be frustrated by a potential slowdown in consumer demand on the back of austerity measures in the country. Headline Industry Data * 2011 port of Constantza tonnage throughput forecast to grow 6%. Over the mid term we project a 39.2% increase. * 2011 port of Constantza container throughput forecast to grow 4.5%. Over the mid term we project a 27.66% increase. * 2011 total trade growth forecast at 6.5% Key Industry Trends Facing Competition For Hub Status: Constantza, the Black Sea's hub port, could soon see competition from the port of Odessa. Investment is being ploughed into the facility and the port will no doubt be seeking to take over dealing with the Ukraine cargo that currently is shipped to Constantza and then on to Ukraine. BMI believes that Romania will remain as the transhipment hub, however, as it offers entry into Central and Eastern Europe and has both DP World and APM Terminals operating there. Risks To Outlook Romania has pulled out of its deep recession, but BMI still fears the impact austerity measure will have on the country's consumer and so by extension container shipping, which is driven by consumer demand. We fear the fiscal measures will be met with a tightening of belts, which could see the box recovery be far more muted than we are currently projecting. A second downside worry is Constantza's role a a transhipment hub, with investment being ploughed into the Ukrainian port of Odessa in a strategy which appears aimed at the port catering for direct services, as it will be able to take bigger ships. Constantza has faced competition and lost out before. In 2009 Constantza, was snubbed in favour of Bulgarian port Bourgas, as major steel producer ArcelorMittal chose to make Bourgas its transhipment hub for raw materials bound for steel operations in Romania.
