By: Rebecca DeLamotte, Americas Musicworks The concert will feature the world premiere of Mark Harvey’s piece Sumner, written in honor of his ancestor Charles Sumner (1811-1874), the United States senator and distinguished statesman from Massachusetts who was a tireless advocate of freedom and equal rights for African Americans. Another highlight will be Harvey’s piece SQCPi, written for the MIT Sesquicentennial. MIT was founded on April 10, 1861, two days before the outbreak of the Civil War, a time when Sumner would be especially prominent as a champion for African Americans. Other Mark Harvey originals will include Peace Soundings (evoking Civil War-era tunes in a contemporary setting) and Soul on Soul, a tribute to Mary Lou Williams, the First Lady of Jazz. Rounding out the program will be Duke Ellington’s Freedom and his modern spiritual Come Sunday.
