March 20, 2011 - PRLog -- In BMI's Q211 Business Environment Ratings (BERs), the Philippines is again ranked 11th of the 17 regional markets surveyed in the Asia Pacific region, below Thailand and above Indonesia. The Philippines' pharmaceutical rating is 49.2, which is well below the average of 52.5 for the region. Globally, the Philippines has fallen five places to occupy 50th position in BMI's 83-market pharmaceutical universe. On the whole however, there is evidence that the market is maturing, with calls to expand the socialised healthcare system to serve the entire nation. It is thought that such changes would boost volume consumption in particular. BMI therefore forecasts that sales of prescription drugs and over-the-counter (OTC) medications are expected to grow from US$2.80bn in 2010 to US$5.44bn in 2020, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.87%.

Following a wave of mergers between financial institutions and other business enterprises, the pharmaceutical industry in the Philippines is expected to follow suit, with the government set to implement new policies promoting mergers among small pharmaceutical manufacturers. In September 2010, the Secretary of Health announced that the Philippine government would impose stricter guidelines on drug procurement in a move designed to encourage small firms to merge with larger, more efficient rivals. The measures have also been designed with a view to eradicating failing or inefficient firms. The new drug procurement policies will be implemented with the help of a third party comprising the University of the Philippines' College of Pharmacy.

Malaria is the eighth leading cause of morbidity in the Philippines and remains endemic in 65 of the 79 provinces in the country, affecting a total of12.5mn people. Pockets of high incidence occur along municipal/provincial borders, in remote areas of the country and in barangays populated by indigenous groups. The tropical disease is considered a moderate problem in the Philippines, with 33,852 cases and 89 deaths reported in 2006 compared with 46,342 cases and 150 deaths the year before.

In other developments, PhilHealth announced that it was on course to achieve its membership target in the Iloilo region of the country by March 2011. The Department of Health regional director, Dr. Ariel Valencia, believes PhilHealth will be able to achieve its target given the current rate of enrolments taking place in the Western Visayas region. PhilHealth aims to enrol at least 60,000 new members from the region. Overall, the Philippine government hopes that by 2013, all citizens will have access to healthcare, including the PhilHealth programme.

The Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT) Project was launched in November 2010 with the aim of using research and development (R&D) as a means of addressing a number of socioeconomic development issues currently facing the Philippines. Areas of particular importance include sustainability, health, security and quality of life. The programme also aims to improve the quality of engineering education and graduates in the country.
