March 17, 2011 - PRLog -- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) one out of every twenty hospital patients acquires an infection while being treated for another illness.  To help combat this problem, the CDC’s Prevention Epicenter Program recently announced $10 million awarded to five medical centers to explore ways to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

Also this week the Journal Sentinel published an article regarding the CDC research and reported that the strategies being explored would include, “The use of combinations of bleach and ultraviolet light to clean hospital rooms and prevent infection.”  John Jernigan, from the CDC’s Office of Healthcare-Associated Infection Prevention Research and Evaluation, was quoted as saying, “The Prevention Epicenter program discovers solutions and refines them so they can work to prevent infections for all healthcare settings."

A leading company on the forefront of advancing ultraviolet technologies to reduce HAIs is UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI).    “Many infection control experts agree that the rate of HAI infections has been increasing and there are reportedly 1.7 million healthcare acquired infections diagnosed each year.  Effective and affordable room disinfection technologies currently exist for healthcare facilities that utilize our innovative UV-C technology,” reported Richard Hayes, President of UVDI.

The use of these products is supported by the Airborne Infectious Diseases position paper from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) that was released in 2009.  The ASHRAE paper states that, “Airborne infectious disease transmission can be reduced using dilution ventilation, specific in-room flow regimes, room pressure differentials, personalized and source capture ventilation, filtration and UVGI.”
