Libyan Interim Government is Determined to Implement No-Fly Zone over Country

Rebel leaders in Libya call for no-fly zone. Heavy artillery air strikes from supporters of Libyan leader, Moammar Gadhafi, aimed at oil fields near Ras Lanuf are part of a coup to retake the city.

March 16, 2011 - PRLog -- Ras Lanuf, Libya - Tension is still running high in Libya as both sides of the current conflict see the tactical advantage of a no-fly zone, while the people of Libya, including foreigners currently within the borders of the country will likely be stranded without means to escape the dangers that present themselves as the power-struggle continues.

"Some countries with significant wealth can react very quickly to a crisis, but for other countries it can be very difficult," says Lawrence Jeff Johnson, the International Labor Organization's Philippine office director, told The American Free Press (AFP) during an interview. There are still plenty of Filipinos left in dangerous territory because of a lack of resources. Johnson sighted that countries such as the US, Canada and the UK are able to easily pull their people out of the country, while other less-fortunate countries are still having problems finding ways to safely provide asylum for their citizens. If a no-fly zone is put into effect, it will make travel out of the country even more difficult than it has already been.

Charter companies have seen an increase in the demand for their flights; not only in Libya, but in other countries as well. The British and United States governments were among the first countries with the resources to easily pull their people out once the violence began breaking out.

Gadhafi recorded a speech on Tuesday, further fueling the fire and trying to build tension between Libya and other countries in an effort to unite his supporters. "They want to take your petrol,” He said. “This is what America; this is what the French, those colonialists, want." Statements like this make it more dangerous to be a foreign national on Libyan soil, and driving the importance of finding ways to safely usher people from the country.

Rebel fighters, armed with anti-aircraft guns and Soviet rifles, positioned themselves to defend the oil fields in Eastern Libya, but were outgunned by heavily armed pro-Gadhafi forces. With such a battle waging, foreigners are more eager to leave now than ever. Private businesses and corporations have made attempts to charter jets at great risks to rescue their employees and other citizens, but if this no-fly zone is put into effect, then these people may be stranded in Libya while other options are explored. At this point, with the violence still escalating, and foreign citizens still trapped within the country’s border are looking for any help they can get, hoping for a safe and speedy end to this conflict in the process.
