About Skipper Donald N. Lawson

Founder and CEO of Donald Lawson Racing, LLC. Donald N. Lawson is a native of Baltimore, Maryland.  After completing high school, Lawson decided to explore his interest in industrial engineering at Morgan State University. Lawson’s passion for sailing ignited as a camper and volunteer at Baltimore’s Living Classroom Foundation Sailing Program. From this experience Donald was sold on making sailing a career. Lawson has proven his ability to take on incredible challenges and succeed.  Donald was the first African American to teach at the Downtown Sailing Center in Baltimore.  After five years he was promoted to the highest instructor level. Donald served as a sailing instructor for the United States Navy at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Lawson’s awe-inspiring competitive drive led him to race in the Chesapeake Bay.  As Donald’s hunger increased for sailing he would contend offshore into the oceans. Lawson sailed a 2,500 nautical mile passage aboard the Open 60 Ocean Planet. He has logged close to 15,000 nautical miles racing and delivering yachts and has won numerous races. Donald’s success on the water included his team Wild Card winning the prestiges and difficult Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Associations (CBYRA) Multihull Championship two consecutive years. Lawson’s dedication and talent has earned him numerous local, national, and international awards. The US Black Engineer & Information Technology Magazine designated Lawson as a “modern day technology leader.” Donald is affiliated with the Universal Sailing Club; an organization for Chesapeake Bay based black sailors.
