March 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Monet Water lilies is a series of approximately 250 oil paintings which have become synonymous with the impressionist art movement for which Claude Monet is most famous. The paintings depict Monet’s flower garden at Giverny and were the main focus of Monet’s artistic production during the last thirty years of his life. Many of the works were painted while Monet suffered from cataracts.

Similarly to his Haystacks series, Monet experimented with series of paintings of his pond from the same angle, but at different times in order to study closely changes of light and season, and reflect these in his paintings. He also started with smaller versions of the lilies, concentrating on pretty details on individual clusters of flowers before becoming more ambitious.

Monet paintings are on display at museums all over the world, including the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri,  the Carnegie Museum of Art, the National Museum of Wales, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes and the Portland Art Museum. During the 1920s, the state of France built a pair of oval rooms at the Musée de l’Orangerie as a permanent home for eight water lily murals by Monet. The exhibit opened to the public on 16 May 1927, a few months after Monet’s death. Sixty water lily paintings from around the world were assembled for a special exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie in 1999.

Monet admitted towards the end of his career that he didn’t feel he needed anymore subjects or models once his pond was completed and ready. He developed a great love for his garden and it remains on show to the public.

The garden played vital importance in the last 30 years or so of Monet’s life, where he conducted a large percentage of his works. Impressionism at the time was a new idea in art, and Monet constantly went against traditional art theory is representing his own emotions and vision of what he was painting. And this proved supremely popular in the capital of world art because of the bright colours and a different use of light. Traditional movements such as Baroque & Renaissance now had critically acclaimed alternatives, and Monet’s Impressionism, Sunrise and Water Lilies series played a large role in this.
