"There are only a handful of aviation photographers who can shoot at Jim Koepnick’s level," said Airplanista Editor and private pilot Dan Pimentel. "He is a master at capturing the excitement of flight by shooing his subject aircraft using only the most dramatic light and scenic backgrounds. With each shot, Jim solidifies what it means to fly, to be free in the sky."

In this interview, Koepnick describes the elegant ballet that takes place during an air-to-air shoot, where a great deal of emphasis is put on safety. He lets the read go along with him on a photo shoot using EAA’s well-known “Photo 1” airplane as a platform, and the piece is illustrated with a number of Koepnick’s brilliant aviation images.
