Are Tween Movie Stars Driving Kids Fashion?

March 8, 2011 - PRLog -- Women's designers are turning to younger and younger stars as muses and models.  Kristen Taylor, President of online tween boutique Juvie, talks about whether this is driving children's fashion trends, or whether it is meant to trickle up to adult buyers.

Elle Fanning wears Rodarte, Valentino, and Marc Jacobs.  Marchesa custom designed Hailee Steinfeld's Oscar dress.  Kiernan Shipka did a fashion spread in Elle.  What do these actors all have in common, other than stunning good looks and loads of talent?  They're all under 15-years-old.

Kristen Taylor, President and Buyer for Juvie, the online boutique that specializes in tween clothing, is not surprised that the designers are dressing these young girls in fashion meant for adult women.  "Tween girls have what many designers would consider the perfect figure: Tall, thin, and long-legged.  Dresses look great on them."  What is more disconcerting is the message this sends to women:  Fashion is for the gamine only.  Women over 15 need not apply.

The question this trend raises, however, is what effect this will have on the fashion market.  Will designers start looking to younger and younger women for fashion inspiration?  Or will older styles trickle down to younger girls?

"Generally, the young actresses wearing couture are dressing very appropriately for their age," said Taylor.  "In fact, many of the styles they wear on the red carpet would look twee on a woman of even 30."  It may just be that the overtly sexy designs of the last decade are giving way to a more youthful, feminine silhouette that is somewhat modest and princess-like.

But what about tween girls who don't have Rodarte's Mulleavy sisters on speed dial?  Juvie (http://www.juvieshop.com) has been dressing tween girls in clothing that is stylish and age-appropriate for years.  Their selection of casual clothes, party dresses, denim and hoodies and jackets walks the fine line between the looks girls want that are more "grown up," and looks that are too adult.  With Juvie's selection of stylish, fashion-forward clothes for tween girls (http://www.juvieshop.com/category/girls_tween_clothing_7_...), parents don't have to worry about her looking inappropriate or too old for her age. Taylor, a parent to a tween and a teen herself, knows that kids ages 7-12 are just that...kids...and she carefully selects pieces from a large range of designers keeping that in mind.
