Gadsden Public Library Friends Membership Growing

March 8, 2011 - PRLog -- Everybody needs friends, and that is especially true of libraries. The Gadsden Public Library has a great line up of programs to show appreciation for their Friends group. At each quarterly meeting, a special speaker is scheduled. Sometimes there's even live music. In January, award winning author Jennie Helderman spoke about her book "As The Sycamore Grows". Music was provided by hammered dulcimer player Craig Boden. The remaining programs will be equal treats:

April 28 at 6pm:  Howard Wiggins of Hearthstone Interior Design in Nashville will be speaking about his book, "What Were You Thinking?" Music will be provided by the Etowah County Youth Orchestra.

July 28 at noon: Lilly Ledbetter will be speaking about her experience regarding the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Instead of music, the documentary film, "Lilly Ledbetter: A Call to Act", will be shown.

October 27 at 6pm: Chad Gibbs, author of "God and Football", will be speaking. Music to be announced closer to the date.

Each paid membership of $10 or more will receive a gift bag with $40 worth of items, an additional benefit of joining the Friends this year.

The Friends group will also have opportunities to help the library raise money. In October there will be the annual book sale where a huge selection of new and used books, paperbacks, audio books, VHS tapes, children and young adult books will all be for sale at incredibly low prices.

"We are hoping to raise money for a digital sign," says Dee Roper, Technical Services supervisor and one of the Friends group coordinators. "There is a real need to publicize our programs so our patrons will know what is going on. We don't want them to miss a thing!"

"We've talked about the possibility of having the Friends Group begin a fundraiser for some type of project.  A digital sign for the library... the cost is probably in the range of $15,000 or more," reported Craig Scott, Public Services Librarian.

That means selling a lot of books at the book sale - and having a lot of Friends. Anyone interested in joining the Friends of the Gadsden Public Library is encouraged to do so by contacting the library :
