Covert Policing Conference 31 March

The Head of Covert Policing at West Midlands Police is headlining a conference that provides best practice for investigators into how to incorporate effective covert policing tactics into a major crime investigations.

Iain O’Brien, who is a leading authority on covert policing will look at the current challenges in this area and focus on:
• Infiltration on the internet
• Use of surveillance
• Covert tasking

Iain with be joined by an expert line-up of speakers who have worked at the forefront of covert policing including in forces including Greater Manchester and PSNI.

Other speakers include:
• Ian Hynes, Greater Manchester Police major incident team: Ian will look at 'Witness Immunity from Prosecution - Assisting Offenders' – a practitioner’s insight into immunity and restricted use undertakings in accordance with SOCPA 2005.


• Peter Russsell and Tim Easlea played a prominent role in shaping covert policing policy and operational activity in the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) as well as at a national level for the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA).

They will explore the wealth of covert potential that is available to SIOs that they might not be aware exists.

• Andrew Mawhinney, a former fellow PSNI officer with a specialism in firearms and covert policing and now consultant will look at ‘Covert Policing and the Exploitation of the Intelligence in order to obtain Best Evidence for a Court Room.’
