March 7, 2011 - PRLog -- It all started with one article, published in 2008, on the treatment of capsulitis of the foot and Morton's neuroma. The article was written by acupuncturist Scott R. Smith to not only share his experience about treating those common foot complaints, but to start a dialogue with other practitioners about acupuncture and the foot.

Smith quickly became the foot pain expert in his community. He realized that there was a very limited amount of published material on the foot conditions he was treating. This led to Smith writing and publishing about each condition he faced.

"Acupuncture treats foot pain very well. If one suffers from capsulitis, Morton's neuroma, Achilles tendinopathy, Sinus tarsi syndrome, Tarsal tunnel syndrome, Plantar fasciitis or heel pain, metatarsalgia or turf toe, then they should know they have choices in the treatment approach they choose. A lot of patient's aren't aware that acupuncture can help the feet. My goal is to change that" says Smith.

Smith realized he could reach more students, practitioners, and patients by combining the published articles into a one-day seminar. The seminar is the only of its kind. The 8 hour, continuing education approved seminar focuses on 7 common foot disorders and how to approach treatment with protocols built from Smith's clinical experience. Seminar feedback has been positive and encouraging. "I decided to put the seminar together and let the people decide if this was a topic they wanted to learn more about. It has been well-received. Even practitioners who have a decade or more of experience than me have said they really got a lot from the material." Smith graduated with honors from Southwest Acupuncture College in Albuquerque, NM. Right after graduation, Smith relocated to the Black Hills of South Dakota, where he ran a successful clinic the past four years. Being homesick and realizing he wanted to be closer to family, Smith moved back to the Philadelphia area to start a clinic.

Smith has upcoming seminars in Colorado and Minnesota and plans on reaching out to schools, students, and practitioners on the east coast now that he's back in PA. Smith has been invited to be the guest speaker at the 2011 Oregon College of Oriental Medicine alumni event, held in Portland, Oregon.
