Follow on Google News | Simi Valley YMCA Receives $20,000 Grant from Harriet H. Samuelsson FoundationThe Simi Valley Family YMCA received a $20,000 grant from the Harriet H. Samuelsson Foundation. The funds will provide financial assistance to low income children so they can attend the Y's afterschool childcare program.
By: Simi Valley YMCA "We never turn any child or any family away from our programs because of an inability to pay," says Dan Jaeger, executive director of the Simi Y. "The funding will help children attend our childcare programs on the campuses of Berylwood, Abraham Lincoln and Santa Suzanna Elementary Schools. These schools have the most children in need out of the 12 licensed afterschool childcare sites we operate in Simi Valley." The Simi Valley YMCA serves 450 children in grades kindergarten through sixth. The Y's afterschool childcare program encourages positive youth development by addressing the mental, physical, spiritual and social needs of each child. "Our staff uses creative projects to enhance learning that focus on academics, health and nutrition, cultural awareness, social skills and positive values," says Jaeger. "Children learn the four principles of character development: The Harriet H. Samuelson Foundation supports organizations that improve the health, education, guidance and welfare of children and adolescents in Ventura County.
