Headtorch gets brighter with LEDs
The headtorch in 127 hours was a lifesaver and brightness depended on innovative LED technology.
By: Dave Jones
Headtorches such as those that can be found at http://www.headtorch.co.uk have developed a great deal over the years.
Only a decade ago the industry was focused on halogen bulbs in headtorches that ate up the power and often required a heavy set of batteries - normally worn on a belt or attached to the back of the headtorch strap. The emergence of LED technology has transformed the headtorch market to products which are lightweight and are much more efficient. For comparison a headtorch with a halogen bulb would run for approx 10 hours on duracell batteries whereas as headtorch with LED bulb technology lasts for over 120 hours.
It might be argued that the intensity of LED bulbs in headtorches is not as bright as those with halogen bulbs but the industry has solved this issue by increasing the number of bulbs in the headtorch and some headtorches also are combination style with a halogen bulb and a LED bulb.
With further development of energy efficient LED bulbs we can only expect that headtorches will be getting smaller, brighter and ultimately make their halogen counterparts obsolete. This is great news for climbers, cyclists and runners - just a few of the people who rely on headtorches in their sports. Of course - the old miners will still use their super bright halogen based models for quite some time although the Chinese Mining Co has developed their own style of LED headtorch which has been issued to their workers for use underground.
In conclusion a headtorch is a great piece of kit for anyone venturing into the outdoors and the development of the LED headtorch has had a massive and very positive impact on design.
