Feb. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Energy Upgrade California offers rebates to many Southern California residents who use cost effective home improvements such as insulation, low-flow water saving devices and heating and cooling systems. The problem is, most of these residents aren’t aware of the program or the available money, which is why local certified contractors specializing in energy efficiency are doing their best to let clients know that an entire-house green remodel benefits not only the environment, but also their wallets.

The rebate amount homeowners can receive is based on percentage of increased efficiency. Homeowners have the choice, depending on the depth of the energy retrofit, of following a prescriptive path for a $1,000 rebate or the performance path with the possibility of a $4,500 rebate. The performance path begins with a comprehensive energy assessment with an approved Energy Upgrade California contractor who can facilitate the rebate process for clients. These certified contractors strive to make existing homes green, comfortable and healthier through energy efficiency.

One such contractor is Wes Harding, President of Harding Construction & Sustainable Solutions. Harding is a BPI-certified Home Performance with Energy Star Contractor who helps homeowners navigate the rebates choices and says the benefits of energy efficiency can far outweigh the obvious. “We lower energy bills and there is return on investment,” Harding says, “but a more comfortable home, enhanced indoor air quality and the reduced impact on the environment is priceless.”

Most homes in L.A. County were built prior to modern energy efficiency standard and leak heated air in the winter and cool air in the summer, causing the use of excessive electricity and natural gas. Energy Upgrade California aims to retrofit 28,000 single family homes and 2,000 multi-family homes, which is the equivalent of removing 36,287 metric tons of greenhouse gases and planting 1,000,000 trees.

A $600 rebate towards a Build It Green GreenPoint Rated Existing Home Certification is also available to homeowners that participate in the Energy Upgrade program. Similar to the LEED for Homes Program, Build It Green’s certification offers homeowners the credibility the home was upgraded to a high standard with third party verification.

Currently the program is available only to people in single family homes who reside in territories covered by both Southern California Gas Company and Southern California Edison, but there are plans to incorporate the program into other cities with their own utilities soon.
