Albert Goodman’s baking prowess raises funds for Macmillan
Albert Goodman held its first staff charity event this week as part of a recent pledge to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2011, with staff at the firm’s Taunton office participating in the inaugural Albert Goodman Cake-Off competition.
The firm’s budding bakers each paid £2 to enter the competition, with less confident cooks paying £1 to sample the cakes and cast their all-important votes. A total of £68 was raised on the day and the coveted title of Best Albert Goodman Cake Maker 2011 went to Sam Harris, whose Apple Tart won 29% of the votes.
The competition was the idea of secretary Debbie Ward, who has worked at Albert Goodman in Taunton for 16 years. Debbie said, “Macmillan Cancer Support is an excellent charity and all the Albert Goodman staff are really keen to participate and contribute to Centenary Business Challenge. The Cake-Off has been especially well supported, particularly by those wishing to taste the cakes and cast a vote. Timing was all important; we held the tasting competition just at the time staff were getting the late-morning munchies! Following the success of the Cake-Off, we are organising several other events over the next few months to contribute further towards Macmillan’s centenary appeal.”
Albert Goodman was the first company in Somerset to sign up to join the Macmillan Cancer Support Centenary Business Challenge. Launched in the New Year, the Challenge asks for 100 companies across the county to raise £1,000 each for the charity in its centenary year, helping people in the county affected by cancer. Every year more than 4,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in Somerset and Macmillan offers practical, medical, emotional and financial support to those affected.
Claire Coles, Area Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, commented, “We are thrilled that Albert Goodman is so excited about getting involved in fundraising for our centenary. It’s a very special year for Macmillan and we are looking forward to working with the team there to help them get the most out of all their efforts. Being the first company to sign up to the challenge we are hoping their enthusiasm will rub off on others.”
Albert Goodman has a number of other events scheduled to support their fundraising efforts for Macmillan, including a Summer Fayre at the Taunton office, so watch this space for more information!
