The Seattle Parks Department leads the nation by offering the cutting edge sport of Roller Derby

The global Roller Derby explosion has reached Seattle which now offers the very first recreational City league to form in the Northwest.

Feb. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- With Roller Derby growing at a rate of 5 leagues forming weekly worldwide, Seattle is quick to recognize that this is more than just a passing fad. Seattle Roller Derby is a recreational league now offering classes at the Magnuson Park Community Center and even scheduling summer camps for junior skaters, and it is also the first Seattle area league to open its doors to male skaters of all ages.
Classes are taught through $40.00 6 week sessions that are divided into beginning, intermediate and advanced skating levels.
The non body- contact beginning classes emphasize safety; exercise, basic rules /skating skills and a fun way to socialize.
Intermediate classes graduate to technique work, light hitting drills and endurance, with a focus on positional blocking, scrimmages and team strategies.
Advanced skaters work on hitting drills and scrimmages with positive sportsmanship, teamwork and mentoring as the highest priority. All advanced skaters will have the opportunity to compete on community teams without the standard prerequisite of tryouts and volunteer committee work.
