“And they’re off!”  For anyone who attends the Saturday races at the Garrison Savannah, this is the familiar shout. Horse racing in Barbados is a passion shared by both locals and visitors and with so many exciting racing events on the calendar; the Rotherley Construction, Inc Stakes & Trophy is not to be missed.

Rotherley Construction, Inc has been supporting horse racing since 2004; their race day is a prelude to one of Barbados most internationally recognised race days the “Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup”. The feature race welcomes three year olds who can become contenders for the 2012 Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup.

This year marks the seventh year Rotherley Construction, Inc has sponsored horse racing, the reasons quoted from Kevin Burke, Vice President of Finance of Rotherley “We like to support local events which offer clean fun for families, as a company it’s important to give back for all to enjoy. Horse racing extends entertainment for the entire family in the Barbadian community, our staff and clients. We also like to sponsor community events including the upcoming Holetown Festival lecture series for the past 10 years”.

About the Barbados Turf Club

The Barbados Turf Club, which regulates and promotes horse racing in Barbados, was established in 1905 and organizes three seasons of racing per year. With approximately 25 race meetings throughout the year running from January to April (Spring Season); May to September (Summer Season) and from November to December (Winter Season).
The location is the Historic Garrison Savannah, close to the capital, Bridgetown. The Garrison Savannah has been the home of horse racing in Barbados since 1845. The officers of the British Regiment, who were stationed in Barbados, used what was then the parade ground to match their horses in races and the wealthy merchants and planters later joined them.

Today, the excitement produced by the thousands of exuberant spectators is contagious and this being Barbados, horse racing is used as a great excuse for an array of entertainment and festivities. The people of Barbados love sharing their sport with visitors and a warm welcome awaits.
