Some 2 thousand years of construction were needed to accomplish these beautiful terraces, the world's most perfect and greatest rice terracing system flushed permanently by a steady stream of clear mountain water directed through a complex irrigation system from top of the mountains through all the rice terraces to turn the originally poor vegetation into a tropical lush and rich rice and fruit paradise.

The original population of the Ifugao started approximately 3000 BC. The population of Ifugao is approximately 120'000 people spread over a surface of approx. 400 sq. kms. of high altitude steep Cordillera mountain region with mountains around Banaue up to 2000+ mtrs a.s.l. and highest peaks to some 2400 mtrs above sea level.

An essential part of the success of this civil engineering project by farmers is due to the fact that a full integration of all communities into nature has been accomplished to a high degree of perfection. Different styles of community building show how people have experimented with different possibilities to live and work in harmony with God made nature.
