Feb. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- In January 2011, a ten-man team led by a group from British Airways, calling themselves the “Kili Flyers” climbed Africa's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, to raise funds for three fantastic charities. Overall nearly £11,000 was raised.
Over £3000 was raised for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation working for long-term conservation of critically endangered mammals in the wild and the benefit of the local people who share their environment. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation which is working hard to find the cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications for children received £3700 and nearly £3800 went to Flying Start, the British Airways global charity which working with Comic Relief aims to transform the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable children in the UK and abroad.
The team climbed via the Lemosho route with Private Kilimanjaro but also took in the difficult challenge of overnighting in the crater at 5600m. Very few climbers are able to experience this because of the high altitude but all of the group summited successfully and survived the night in -25⁰  temperatures.
Captain Rod Young, Head of Aviation Safety at BA, and the group leader, commented “This will remain an experience that is one of life's memories and perhaps even a life changing experience. Well done to all at Private Expeditions and thanks to all the local team.  You cannot underestimate how big this is for most if not all of us.”
Jane Deakin, Managing Director of Private Kilimanjaro added “It is fantastic to see a team like Rod’s raise so much, for so many charities. The whole emphasis of our Charity Climb Programme is to get group’s like Rod’s safely up and down the mountain with the most money possible going to the charity”

Not content with this year’s efforts Rod is already planning his next charity fundraising adventure and is off to colder climates, starting with Mont Blanc for a short ice climbing and ice crevasse training course  that will give him the required qualifications to head south to Antarctica and climb Mt Vinson!!
