Corinthian Travel Private Escorted Luxury Holidays To Crusader Syria and Jordan
Syria and Jordan offer a unique opportunity to visit Crusader castles with the added luxury of Corinthian Travel’s luxury escorted holidays.
In their efforts to conquer new lands and spread Christianity, the Crusaders set up many different castles, forts and strongholds, many of which still stand today. At the time they used cutting edge castle architecture and today they are still testament to a glorious passage of time in military building.

Hugh Fraser, managing Director of Corinthian Travel, has meticulously designed fully escorted luxury holidays to Syria and Jordan that not only allow the discerning traveller to visit Crusader castles, but also to immerse themselves in Jordanian and Syrian culture.
Some of the Crusader castles available to visit through Corinthian Travel’s luxury tours to Syria and Jordan include:-
Crac des Chevaliers (Syria):
A stunning piece of military architecture once described by T.E. Lawrence as: ‘the best preserved and most wholly admirable castle in the world’. Its fortifications are the easternmost of a chain of five castles sited to secure the Homs Gap – the easiest access between the Mediterranean and the Syrian interior. The castle derived its great strength from two concentric lines of defence punctuated by massive towers and once held a garrison of 2,000. Crac des Chevaliers was designed and built by The Knights Hospitaller who can be credited for their ingenuity and great architectural skills that have led to this particular Crusader castle remaining so well preserved today.
Marqab Castle (Syria)
One of the largest Crusader castles built was the Marqab castle (Margat) which sits on the edge of an extinct volcano overlooking the Mediterranean. Another Crusader castle from the Knights Hospitaller who managed to maintain their foothold on the region until 1285.
Saladin’s castle (Syria)
Originally built to defend and bolster the route between Latakia and Aleppo, Saladin’s castle, once known as Saone or Sayhoun, is one of the best examples of early Crusader military architecture and is set in a spectacular ridge top location. Despite boasting one of the most impregnable entrances in the world the castle fell to Saladin in 1188 after a very short siege.
Kerak castle (Jordan)
Once under the control of Raynald de Chatillon (also known as the Elephant of Christ), Kerak castle is linked to one of the most daring and controversial of the Crusading Knights. Kerak castle was instrumental in defending the Crusaders’ exposed eastern flank.
Shobak castle (Jordan)
Shobak, another fine example of the Crusades contribution of castle architecture formed part of the defences of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
Aleppo citadel (Syria)
Aleppo’s Citadel dominates the skyline of the city and dates back to the 12th and 13th and offers a great insight into some of the best Islamic military architecture in the world.
Ajlun castle (Jordan)
Ajlun offers the visitor the opportunity to witness a rare example of a wholly Islamic fortification which is known as Qala’at Ar-Rabadh in Arabic has been undergone significant restoration and offers wonderful views in all directions.
Corinthian Travel also offers luxury trips to visit a number of castles that were built by the Assassins to fend off the Arabs and Crusaders with the most important historical location at the capital of the Assassin kingdom at Misyaf in Syria.
What makes this castle particularly intriguing is its association with the mysterious order of the Hashishiyyin, or Assassins, a sect that once sought to influence regional politics through carrying out spectacular assassination attempts on rulers who opposed them.
