Should I consider using synthetic oil at my next oil change?

This article deals with a difficult decision faced by millions of motorist regarding the usage of synthetic oil. Let’s look at some facts and fictions regarding synthetic oil.

Feb. 16, 2011 - PRLog -- By definition Synthetic oil is an artificial lubricant, this type of oil consists of chemically modified petroleum, hence the term “synthetic”. The chemical properties of synthetic oil do offer few advantages compare to traditional oil developed from crude oil. There are three main advantages for synthetic oil.

Higher “flash point” or better performance in high temperature is a notable advantage of synthetic oil. If your vehicle demands a high engine rpm or output, synthetic oil will offer you better protection against oil break down at high temperature. For example if you are running your car on the race track then synthetic oil is definitely the choice of oil without question. In everyday driving condition synthetic oil may be a complete waste especially if your engine was not designed for synthetic oil. Refer to your owner’s manual and read upon the manufacturer’s recommendation for oil type and weight. Another impressive advantage of synthetic oil is the fact it is resistant to thermal breakdown, this means longer life span for your oil as well as better protection for your engine.

Improved fuel economy is a big myth when it comes to synthetic oil. While synthetic oil offers better lubrication and lower friction, it will improve your fuel economy slightly. But don’t expect miracles, with different types of engine configuration the result will vary. Synthetic oil is not suitable for vehicles that are brand new or less than 3000 km, during your engine break in stage lower friction may work against you. One big advantage of synthetic oil is better lubrication during a cold start. Because of the lowered friction this type of oil offers better protection of your engine especially in cold climates.

Overall synthetic oil has superior chemical composition compare to traditional oil, but you shouldn’t mix the two oil types. If you are currently using synthetic oil you should continue to use the same type. Keep in mind synthetic oil is more costly compare to normal oil, but in the long run the synthetic oil will offer you engine better protection and longer life span.
