Media Training Question #73 – Is Miley Cyrus Breaking Billy Ray’s Achy Breaky Heart?

Feb. 16, 2011 - PRLog -- I read this report yesterday that Dad to Miley Cyrus, Billy Ray the sometimes famous Country Music star is having a hard time these days with the way his “Hanna Montana” daughter is living her life, and he has regrets.

Claiming the Disney show made famous by Miley has ruined his family and caused his divorce with his wife Tish, he is now telling all in an interview in GQ magazine where his focus is on the mistakes he has made as a parent.  I for one appreciated his honesty and as any parent knows it’s tough sometimes to find the line between parent and friend, but it is certainly not impossible to find that balance.

The beginning of Billy Ray’s resistance to the way Miley is now living her life was when he refused to attend her 18th birthday party because the decision was made to have it at a bar, and how she was able to do that legally is not understood.  Apparently pictures or video surfaced showing young Miley smoking a bong, although her publicist said the substance being smoked was a legal substance, she should of course not be smoking anyway, but that may be the least of her problems, according to her father.

Billy Ray says that Miley Cyrus’s behavior is leaning in such a destructive way that he even compared her life to the troubled and difficult lives of Michael Jackson and Curt Cobain, who committed suicide.  That’s very serious stuff and if true then an intervention is in immediate order, don’t you think?

He further believes she is in danger and that her “entourage”, those who are paid to protect her and keep her safe, are doing anything but.

Billy Ray Cyrus was then quoted as saying, "It's the first time in my life I've ever stood up for myself," I've always let people just run over me. The least likely thing anyone in my family thought I would ever do is stand up for myself."

That is an odd statement and says to me that this is one frustrated father and the sincerity in that statement is telling.  I feel for the guy and as a parent I understand how important communication is critical to happy and healthy relationships with your children.  I would imagine that is made much more difficult when one of your children, he has five all told, is one of the most popular teen stars in the world.

Sources say that Miley Cyrus is on track, all things being equal, to be a billionaire during her career, and that was considered a conservative estimate.  Not being a fan and honestly I couldn’t name a single song she sings and having never seen her television show on Disney I have no idea how talented she is, but she must be at some level and it would take an extraordinary amount of parenting to make sure you are protecting her and finding balance for her, if that’s even possible, as I think it is.

Miley Cyrus is now 18 and therefore she is a legal adult, whether she is ready for it or not.  She is a pretty young woman, has major dollars, seemingly has every reason to expect a full and gifted career and you hope that she doesn’t become just another sad story that we tire of like Brittney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and others.

As we watch stars rise, we also have this disgusting way of enjoying watching them fall.  Magazines sell much faster when someone is experiencing hardship as opposed to when they do something good, sadly enough.  Entire television shows are dedicated to mistakes stars make and they thrive in the ratings the worse the news is.

So Billy Ray Cyrus, dedicated Dad, searching for a way to communicate with his daughter uses a magazine interview to at least do part of that.  I’ll assume as well that he has talked to her or tried to as well.  I have found nothing that says their relationship is in tatters, but I believe he does have her best interest at heart and now that she has surpassed that magical 18th birthday his influence is now only about love and hope and what a horrible feeling that must be for him as he sees her beginning to fail and fall.

He admits he made a mistake by being too much friend and not enough Dad.  He can’t change that now but that doesn’t mean he should stop trying to influence her and guide her.  Again, I’m not a fan but I am a Dad and as such whenever I see a parent struggling to communicate with their children especially when they see something going on that they can correct before it gets out of hand and the child just won’t allow it, it hurts me to see it.

Conventional wisdom says that kids make mistakes and they will figure it out for themselves, and that’s mostly true, but most kids aren’t on their way to making a billion dollars and you have to believe that gives her access to more trouble than you or I can imagine.  Good luck Billy Ray and never, ever, ever give up trying as you will always be her Dad and the effort is never wasted.
