Feb. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Choosing between the petrol or diesel variant of a car has always been a tricky question. While petrol versions are cheaper to buy, it is the diesel engines that are much more efficient than the petrol counterparts and run on fuel that costs way less. But it is both unjust as well as essentially wrong to calculate long run profitability of a car on the basis of initial purchase price. There are several other factors such as fuel prices, servicing costs, mileage and emissions based charges that determine the long run impact of a buying decision between a petrol vs diesel variant.

Though the conventional wisdom says that petrol versions tend to be much faster, smoother and quieter than the noisy diesel counterparts, we cannot completely ignore the fact that diesel cars consume significantly less fuel than their petrol equivalents, consequently resulting in less damage to the environment. Advancements in diesel technology have resulted in more polished and turbocharged diesel cars that can make any petrol variant envy for their excellent acceleration and drivability. Diesel engines offer excellent torque which is especially useful for towing. Even though petrol cars are initially cheap, but if you’re looking for your car as a long term investment. Then the diesel variants surely give you the maximum return on investment.

However this doesn’t testify the diesel versions as clear winners of this debate. Equipped with new technologies like turbo-charger (the ability to generate more power by improving air-fuel mixture), the petrol cars have taken the fuel efficiency to new levels. Though it is a matter of personal choice to choose between the petrol or diesel variant, below is the list of few (http://www.ecardlr.com/CustomerReview.aspx)petrol Vs. diesel car reviews that will make your choice much easier.

VW Volkswagen Vento Petrol Vs. VW Volkswagen Vento Diesel:

For Indian customers Volkswagen Vento is available in five variants – Diesel Trendline, Diesel Highling, Petrol Trendline, Petrol Highline Manual Transmission (with five speed manual gearbox) and Petrol Highline Automatic Transmission (with six speed automatic gearbox). Though the diesel and petrol variants of Volkswagen Vento both are equipped with 1.6 liter engine, 5-speed manual gearbox, giving an output of 105 PS, there is huge rpm difference between diesel engine delivering 4400rpm while the petrol variant giving an rpm of 5250.

The Volkswagen Vento diesel delivers a mileage of 20 km/litre whereas the petrol version has a mileage of 16 km/litre. There is a price difference of Rs. 1 Lac between petrol and diesel variants. Even for the consumers with a lesser monthly usage, VW Vento diesel version would be good choice, if the price is not a constraint. Usage over a period of three years will counter balance the initial high price of VW Volkswagen Vento diesel.

Corolla Altis Petrol Vs. Corolla Altis Diesel:

Toyota Corolla Altis was always a sleek and plush sedan car with sophisticated appearance. Other than the front grille, the Toyota Corolla Altis diesel has no difference in exteriors from the petrol variant. The diesel version of Corolla Altis is priced at Rs. 10.95 Lac with top end model costing as much as Rs. 13.75 Lac (the ex-showroom price in Delhi). The engine is immensely quite and the car doesn’t have any typical traces of smelling like a diesel car.

The engine of Toyota Corolla Altis diesel is powered by 1.4 litre, four cylinder D-4 D diesel engines that deliver maximum output of 88.6PS@3800 rpm. Though the power specifications don’t signal very thrilling fuel efficiency figures, one of the most striking features of the Altis diesel is its wheelbase of 26mm, equivalent of that of Toyota Innova, which accounts for pleasurable drivability of that of an MPV while riding in a sedan.

Nissan Micra Petrol Vs. Nissan Micra Diesel:

It would be unfair to observe petrol vs. diesel car reviews without considering Micra, the latest heartthrob by one of the leading car manufacturers Nissan. Nissan Micra is available in both diesel and petrol with manual transmission. It’s a great car with superb spacious interiors with some really attractive features like anti-lock breaking system and front seat airbags. The car comes packed with lots of luxury features like advanced integrated audio systems to offer best in the class entertainment for every journey.

Nissan Micra offers mileage of 18 km/liter in case of petrol and 16 km/liter in case of the diesel engine and seeing the price difference, we suggest that city drivers can easily opt for petrol engine for better mileage.

The debate of choosing the best between diesel and petrol cars would rage on until the diesel engine quality and its maintenance issues are resolved as historically they are the ones which have the maximum problems. But with advancement in technology and rising fuel prices, buying a diesel car won’t be such a bad thing after all.
