The devices are flowing at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today. In addition to big announcements from Samsung and LG, Sony is looking to make its own impact with the introduction of the XPERIA Play, a unique Android phone aimed at gamers looking to get their gaming fix on the go without carrying around two devices.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play, much rumored over the last several months as the "PlayStation Phone," and first officially announced during a Super Bowl ad last weekend, looks like your average Android slider on the outside. When you flip it open, however, you get a controller similar to Sony's DualShock instead of a keyboard.

The XPERIA Play has a vibrant 4-inch display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and will launch as a Verizon Wireless exclusive later on this Spring. The XPERIA Play will be able to play standard games and download all the usual apps from the Android market as well as special games tailored to the device, which will be available from a new, laptop batteries specialized Sony Ericsson Market. Once you download a game from the Sony Ericsson store you'll be able to add it to your homescreens and access it like any other Android app.

We don't know if you'll be able to use the device's gaming buttons to play standard Android games — the layout appears to be a Super Nintendo emulator fan's wet dream — but we can be sure that there will be a slew of unique games on the XPERIA Market for the device. Games look excellent on the bright 4-inch screen, and you will no longer have to futz with clumsy touchscreen controls.
