By: Joseph Peterson We are light-years ahead of these home builders since we have been building our homes for at least the past decade to the Energy Star® standards which they are now just discovering. Recently, we decided to have our homes certified to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Star program criteria which evaluates how energy efficient our homes are as compared to their Home Energy Rating System (HERS). The HERS score (the lower the score, the better) rates the energy efficiency and projects the utility costs. We have consistently scored at 40 to 65 on their scale. This is 35% to 60% more efficient than houses built to code. Existing homes built fifteen or more years ago generally score at 130 which means that our homes are more than twice as energy efficient. A foreclosed home may cost less upfront; however, chances are you will pay double the utility costs forever.
