King Island Dairy top taste at Australian Grand Dairy Awards
Against tough competition from award winning dairies around Australia, King Island Dairy won two champion title awards for their King Island Dairy Black Double Brie and Endeavour Blue,at the recent Australian Grand Dairy Awards on 9 Feb 2011.
The King Island Dairy Black Double Brie was awarded the Champion White Mould Cheese, and the King Island Dairy Endeavour Blue the Champion Blue Cheese at a gala ceremony in Melbourne.
Swiss-born Head Cheesemaker, Ueli Berger, accepted the awards on behalf of all of the King Island Dairy team.
“I know I can speak for everyone who works at King Island Dairy when I say we are thrilled to win not one, but two awards this year, awards which we consider to be the “best of the best” of the Australian dairy industry,” Mr Berger said.
“We make cheese on King Island because we love what we do, and we love where we live. This passion of handcrafted artisan cheeses can certainly be seen, and tasted, in the quality of cheese we produce on the island.
“It is with great delight that we accept this award, and we look forward to many more years of artisan cheesemaking... and of bringing a little slice of King Island to the world.”
The Endeavour Blue is made in the traditional Gorgonzola style, a stunning full bodied blue produced in 8kg rounds and a long-time Australian favourite.
The King Island Black Double Brie is a classic French style cheese made from cow’s milk with high butter fat content and the addition of cream. It is part of a specialty range of five indulgent and exclusive “Black” label cheeses produced under the watchful eye of Head Cheesemaker Ueli Berger and handcrafted using traditional cheesemaking techniques.
The complexity of King Island Black cheeses come from the area’s distinctive terroir, a combination of micro-climate, soils, topography and the use of unique cultures which are then blended into the rich King Island milk. Over 6,000 Friesian and Jersey cows are free to graze on pristine, wind-swept pastures all year round to produce some of the richest and sweetest milk in the world – and this milk is exactly the reason why King Island Dairy is internationally recognised year after year for its award-winning cheeses.
The Australian Grand Dairy Awards reward quality, excellence and innovation in Australian dairy produce with 9 of the 19 categories strictly focused on cheese. The winner of each category is awarded a gold champion medal.
