Feb. 11, 2011 - PRLog -- Dr. Samuel Lam, Dallas plastic surgeon and world-renowned expert on fat grafting, is featured in the current January 2011 issue of Plastic Surgery Practice on his views regarding facial fat transfer. The article is conducted in an interview style by Rima Bedevian asking Dr. Lam as one of two experts questions regarding his thoughts on fat grafting.

In the article, Dr. Lam discusses how fat transfer (see http://www.lamfacialplastics.com/procedures/facial-rejuvenation/fat-grafting/) if done well should be considered a permanent injectable product likening the transferred fat to a transplanted hair graft following a hair transplant.  Both types of grafts he argues gain blood supply and over time not only survive but begin to thrive after 6 to 12 months as new blood supply is formalized (a process known medically as neovascularization).

Dr. Lam also cautions that the risk of overfilling a patient and hoping that the fat will dissipate is serious, as he believes with good fat grafting technique the fat should have very good retention and as mentioned above actually improve over time.  With overfilled faces, patients do not look rejuvenated but unnaturally bloated, which is not the objective of quality fat grafting.  Dr. Lam believes that early failures with fat grafting were due to improper technique and also a focus on the wrong areas of the face, namely the lips and the lower facial folds where fat grafting survival is typically poor.

The article concludes with his thoughts regarding stem cell application with fat transfer and he advises that it is still too early for our understanding of the role of stem cells at this point.  Without long-term results, he argues we do not know long-term safety.  He attributes some of the positive changes he sees in his patients’ skin to the improving light reflex on augmented skin following fat transfer and discounts the attribution that all of these changes are stem-cell related as an overly simplified and speculative opinion.
