Feb. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Whether creating booming rhythm and sound with a Taiko drum, combining movement and tale via a StorYoga™ session, or attending a thrilling Major League Baseball game, the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center is offering an array of education programs and special events for all tastes now through April.  

Friday February 11– Art Activity: Family Fun Friday Cookie decorating
Cost:    $2.00 Members; $2.50 Non-Members (with paid admission)
Time:    10:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Location:    Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center
Decorate and eat a scrumptious Valentine’s Day cookie using festive icing and sprinkles. Activity offered every Friday. Themes vary weekly.

Saturday, February 12 – Event:  Delray Beach Garlic Festival Kids Cook-Off
Cost:   FREE with paid admission to the festival
Time:   1:30 PM – 2:30 PM
Location:   Delray Garlic Festival Cook-Off Stadium
Partnering with Zis-Boom-Bah, an interactive parent-and-kid-friendly dinner planner, the Schoolhouse is partnering with PickChow Across America at the Delray Garlic Festival Kid’s Cook-off with well-known chefs Howie Kleinberg and Andy Trousdale.

Saturday, February 26 – Presentation: Surfrider Foundation Ocean education for kids
Cost:    FREE with paid admission
Time:    2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Location:    Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center
Presenters from this nationally known nonprofit organization will educate children on the protection and appreciation of the world’s oceans, beaches and sea life.

Sunday, February 27 – Community: Beach Cleanup with the Surfrider Foundation
Cost:    FREE
Time:   7:30 AM – 9:00 AM
Location:   Boynton Beach Inlet Park (south side)
Schoolhouse visitors, members and supporters will have the opportunity to spend a morning at the beach and give back to the community by participating in the Surfrider Foundation’s first Beach Cleanup of 2011.

Tuesdays, March 1, 8,15,22,29 – Book Look: An Interactive Performance Storytime
Cost:   FREE with paid admission
Time:   Two sessions: 10:30 AM -11:00 AM; 11:15 AM-11:45 AM
Location:   Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center
“The Library Lady” will perform well-known children’s stories with interactive songs and visuals.  

Wednesdays, March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 – Class: ABCD Eat Right
Cost:    $2.00 Members; $2.50 Non-Members (with paid admission)
Time:    10:30 AM-11:30 AM
Location:    Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center
In recognition of March as National Nutrition Month, parents and kids can learn more about kid-friendly health foods and active lifestyles– because it’s never too early to start building stronger bodies and minds! Sessions last about 50 minutes and include a healthy and tasty snack.

Wednesday, March 2 - Art Activity:  Waldorf Wednesday
Cost:   $2.00 Members; $2.50 Non-Members (with paid admission)

Location:   Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center
Representatives from the Sea Star Initiative/Waldorf School will conduct an art activity using all-natural materials. Waldorf education strives to transform education into an art that educates the whole child—the heart and the hands, as well as the head.

Fridays, March 4,11,18,25 – Class: StorYoga™ for Mommy ‘n Me (Parent and Child)
Cost per session: $12 Members $15 Non-Members
Price includes parent and child. Can pre-register for all 4 sessions at discounted rate.

Parents and little-ones can both start their day energized with a session of StorYoga – a powerful balance of movement and tale perfect for parent and child. StorYoga™ is a self-designed program that brings together children’s literature and the joyous movement of yoga. In this way, animals and characters are taken from story and brought to life through body, shape, sound and movement.

In honor of March as National Nutrition Month, enjoy Family Fun Friday with Food. Offered at its NEW TIME, children can use various food products to make and take creative artwork.  

Saturday, March 5 – Presentation: Surfing History Project
Cost:   FREE with paid admission
Time:   11:00 AM
Location:   Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center
Tom Warnke of the Palm Beach County Surfing History Project will share personal surfing stories with children and educate them on how surfing as a sport can promote discipline and teach important life lessons.

Sunday, March 20, 2011—Event: Spring Training with the Schoolhouse
Cost:   $37.50 Members; $47.50 Non-Members
Time:   Bus leaves Schoolhouse promptly at 10:00 AM
Location:   Depart Schoolhouse for game at Roger Dean Stadium; Return to Schoolhouse
Batter up! Take a special trip to the Mets vs. Marlins Spring Training Game at Roger Dean Stadium. Enjoy private, luxury transportation, VIP access to batting practice, premium seating and great photo and  autograph opportunities. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required.

Session 3:  3rd and 4th grade   1:00 PM
Session 4:  5th and 6th grade   2:30 PM  
Location:    Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center – Amphitheater (outside)
Discover the booming beat of a taiko drum with an, intimate, age-tailored workshop held at the Schoolhouse Amphitheater. Children will be introduced to taiko etiquette and some basic Japanese language while learning simple repetitious patterns of rhythms which helps to develop motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Sessions last about 50 minutes.

Sunday, April 3 – Event: Stand Up for Kids Comedy Show
Cost:                      $3.00 Members; $5.00 Non-Members
Time:                     Shows at 2:00 pm and 4:30 pm
Location:              Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center – Amphitheater (outside)
Giggle, chuckle or laugh out loud to the wisecracks of Michael Luongo, a comedian from Las Vegas, as he presents a comedy show just for kids. Through comedy, Luongo’s jokes teach kids how to deal with bullying and build self-esteem. Shows last about 45 minutes each and are meant for ages 4-9.

Saturday, April 16 – Fundraiser: 10th Anniversary Dinner Dance
Cost:   Tickets start at $100
Time:   6:00 PM-9:00 PM
Location:   Quail Ridge Country Club, Boynton Beach
Enjoy a celebration of the Schoolhouse’s 10th year anniversary, recognizing those individuals who helped shape local history, and played a key role in the founding of the Museum. Enjoy a fabulous evening of fine food, dancing and entertainment at the Quail Ridge Country Club. Tickets are $100/each and sponsorships begin at $500.


About the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center:
Built in 1913 as the original Boynton Beach Elementary School and added to the National Registry of Historic Places, the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center has operated since November of 2001 as a history-based learning experience for children and families, featuring interactive exhibits, group tours and signature education programs that highlight South Florida Culture.

The Schoolhouse is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Admission prices are $3 for children ages 2 - 17, $4 for seniors, and $5 for adults. Members and children under 2 are free.

Experience South Florida's history through 2 floors of hands-on, interactive exhibits for ages 2-12. Learn art, music, the sciences and more through educational programs and special events. Membership and birthday party packages are also available.
