Feb. 11, 2011 - PRLog -- There are still many people today who suffer from hearing loss but are reluctant to get a hearing test and fitted with hearing aids due to outdated information about their appearance and overall functionality. Hearing aid technology has come a long way with the older analog devices being mostly phased out and digital technology taking its place. Users experience a greater amount of freedom along with improved and more natural hearing even in environments with lots of background noise. Many of the new models also have the capability to eliminate any buzzing or whistling noises which are common complaints in some of the older styles of hearing aids.
Whether one uses a hearing aid or not, our required hearing levels differ from situation to situation. With uncompromised hearing people are able to automatically filter out background noise in order to be able to carry on a conversation with one or more people in social environments. It would be extremely disconcerting to hear all the sounds around us at the same level such as, the noise of traffic or the many sounds in a typical busy restaurant. The noise reduction system on advanced wireless hearing aids has the ability to adjust the amplification as is needed by the user.
One of the many benefits of wireless hearing aids it that one hearing aid can actually transmit information to the other one. In other words, programming the button on one aid will automatically change the setting on the other one to adjust the settings for background noise on both. More and more of today’s FM listening systems have been adapted with wireless receivers and are integrated for the use of those with hearing aids. This technology is able to virtually eliminate the effects of background noise as well as distance since the voice is being delivered wirelessly. It is now common for lecture halls and theatres to be equipped with assistive listening systems that can transmit sound directly to one’s hearing aid from the stage.
Older style hearing aids were typically equipped with omni directional microphones meaning that all sound was being amplified at the same level from all directions. With newer directional microphones, sound that is coming directly from the front of a person is amplified more that those coming from behind or further away. In most social situations speech comes from the direction that the listener is facing with background noise originating from other directions. The result is that directional microphones provide those wearing the hearing aid a significant improvement in noise to signal ratios.
Although directional microphones do greatly improve the ability to hear speech in social or other noisy settings, they work best when the distance to the person speaking is smaller. FM systems on the other hand still provide a much better noise to signal ratio. This is the case even when the distance from the person listening to the one who is speaking is considerably greater. The specialists at one’s local hearing center will be able to give clients advice on which type of wireless hearing aid is best suited to their particular needs.
