Feb. 11, 2011 - PRLog -- The HTC Desire HD and BlackBerry Torch 9800 are among the most lusted after smartphones on the market. Both phones certainly look the part – but which is the best buy?

Let's start with the operating system. The BlackBerry Torch 9800 features RIM's latest operating system, BlackBerry 6, which has some excellent new features including Universal Search. This works in a similar way to Google Instant search in that it predicts what you are looking for, and this means it is incredibly fast to pull up contacts and dial a call, faster than the Desire. http://www.clove.co.uk/htc-desire-hd

Apps are also easier to navigate with the BlackBerry 6 system than they were in previous BlackBerry incarnations and this is a welcome change.

The HTC Desire boasts Android Froyo 2.2 OS, which features a great new browser. This has been enhanced with the HTC Sense interface and what's more the operating system can be customised to your own individual requirements.

The screen of the HTC Desire HD is one of its strongest selling points. Measuring 4.3 inches (compared with the BlackBerry Torch's 3.2 inches) the crispness of the HTC's screen has to be seen to be believed. It is a 480x800 WVGA touchscreen that is bright, sharp and excellent for viewing videos, pictures etc on. It's also very clear for everyday standard phone use.

Meanwhile, the BlackBerry Torch's capacitive touch screen is 360x480, which works well enough in most circumstances, although it can be a little grainy. Here it's really a matter of what you want your screen to be capable of.

The BB Torch 9800 offers a handy option for those unsure about touch screen technology, or who just feel more comfortable typing on a standard keyboard. For look, beneath the sturdy touch screen, there lurks a standard qwerty keyboard that's large enough even for those with broad fingers to type on comfortably. If you do a lot of typing on the hoof this will undoubtedly be very useful; the keyboard is great for answering emails while for a quick BlackBerry Messenger update it's easy to use the on-screen touch screen keyboard.

This does make the Torch 9800 rather chunkier than the HTC Desire HTC, although bodyweights are about the same. The HTC Desire has a lovely, smooth, shiny aluminium body, while the Torch has a ribbed back, which can improve grip.

Still, it has to be said in terms of looks alone, the HTC Desire HD is the hands down winner.

Next we come to memory. Storing your music, pictures and videos is naturally very important and here the BlackBerry Torch 9800 really excels. It has 4GB of built-in memory and can also take a microSD/SDHD card up to 32GB.

The HTC Ace has only got 1.5GB of storage space, though this can also be expanded with a 32gb microSD card.

When it comes to what to use all this space for, chances are you'll be looking to the respective app stores – BlackBerry App World and Android Marketplace. Android Marketplace has about 80,000 apps for you to choose from, while BlackBerry App World has about 10,000. Although they are both continually growing, the HTC Desire HD clearly wins in terms of app potential.

In conclusion, the HTC Desire HD is a better looking phone with an excellent quality screen. The BlackBerry Torch 9800 however has a great OS and all the features RIM fans have grown to expect – such as email push. The keyboard is very useful too.

Whatever your requirements in a smartphone, both of these are well worth a look.
