Feb. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- West Palm Beach, FL – Burman, Critton, Luttier & Coleman warns parents of an unsafe teen driving stunt called “Car Surfing,” which is also known as “Skitching” or “Ghost Riding”. It is extremely dangerous and is often catastrophic or deadly. Teens glamorize this risky behavior and post on video-sharing sites.

Car Surfing is when a teen rides on the outside of a car or truck while standing on the vehicle’s roof, trunk or hood when the vehicle is in motion, while someone else is driving. Skitching is when a teen holds onto a car while riding in a shopping cart, on top of a skateboard, on skates or on a bike. Ghost Riding is when a car is in motion but no one is behind the wheel.

According to a Center of Disease Control (CDC) report (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5741a2.htm) between 1990 and 2008, 58 people died in car surfing accidents alone with another 41 injured. Many incidents occurred at a low speeds and were often the results of a sudden change in speed or change in vehicle direction. The CDC does not have counts on the number of injuries or deaths caused from skitching or ghost riding.

Parents can influence teen behavior and help educate and encourage safe driving behaviors. Parents need to talk to their kids about responsible driving and the risks associated with this responsibility. They should remind teens that they not only have responsibly for driving safely, obeying traffic laws, and respecting the rights of other drives; they also are responsible for the safety of their passengers.
