High Levels of VOCs can cause IAQ Problems and Damage People’s Health

Feb. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- According to the EPA, studies have found that levels of several organic chemicals average 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors.  Volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs, refer to organic chemical compounds which have significant vapor pressures and can affect the environment and human health.   Some have familiar names, such as formaldehyde, while others are known to few.  

VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short and long term adverse health effects. VOCs are emitted as gases from many common solids or liquids used by man and found in industry. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors than outdoors.  VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products, furnishings and building materials found in industrial, commercial and residential settings.

The ability of organic chemicals to cause health effects varies greatly from those that are highly toxic, to those with no known health effect. Some of these chemicals can be toxic, allergenic and carcinogenic.  As with other pollutants, the extent and nature of the health effect will depend on many factors including level of exposure and length of time exposed.
