Feb. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Banking Sector On A Positive Development Path  Despite the continued dominance of state-owned banks in Bangladesh's banking system hampering  efficiency gains, there have been a number of positive developments on this front of late, such as  improvements in automation and the increasing dominance of private banks in the remittance business.  We believe there is long-term growth potential for the industry, although we anticpate growing risks from  banks' investments in the local equity market.  Bangladesh's banking sector remains largely underdeveloped and dominated by state-owned commercial  banks. While this and its isolation from global financial conditions allowed local banks to escape the  woes that plagued other emerging markets during the 2008-2009 global financial crisis, we believe  modernising technology and improving international links in order to improve the range of banking sector  services will be key to developing banking sector efficiency and boosting economic growth over the  coming years. Reducing the dominance of state-owned commercial banks such as Agrani Bank, Janata  Bank, Rupali Bank and Sonali Bank will be crucial in this regard. Even though state-owned banks now  only control an estimated 40% of total assets, compared with 65% in 2002, there is still a long way to go  to improve efficiency. In general, recent developments are supportive of efficiency gains in the sector.  According to Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman, the ongoing automation of the country's banking  sector is expected to boost economic growth by at least 1% per annum once it is complete, which is  expected around 2012. With assistance from the Department for International Development (DFID), the  central bank is carrying out an integrated automation programme that will have banking services using  cyber technology by 2011. Under the programme, an automated clearinghouse will replace the traditional  cheque clearing system over the coming months, and the Bangladesh Electronic Fund Transfer Network  (BEFTN) will be in place next year. Bangladesh Bank has conducted a successful simulation of its  automated clearinghouse, which will link the country's banks under an automated cheque clearing system  from November 1 2010, significantly reducing clearing time. This should provide a significant boost to  local businesses in terms of paying bills, fund transfers and tax payments, improving overall economic  efficiency.
