Feb. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- NEW YORK– Fordham University’s most iconic sports immortal Vince Lombardi will be remembered by the nation Sunday when the Super Bowl championship trophy which bears his name is presented to the victor of the Packers-Steelers showdown. And on Saturday, five athletic standouts will join the revered Lombardi in the Fordham Hall of Fame at induction ceremonies at Rose Hill. Former Fordham Football star defensive back Tad Kornegay (CBA, ’05), who capped his Fordham career by winning the 2005 Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial Award as the school's male student-athlete of the year, and now plies his trade for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, will be joined by Kirstin Gellatly (FCRH '03, Women's Soccer), Edgar Nanne (FCRH ‘03, Rowing), Mollie Welsh Kruger (FCRH ’87, Women’s Swimming and Diving) and William Slater (CBA '64, GSAS ’66, Track and Cross Country) will be enshrined as the “Class of 2011.”

Ceremonies will be conducted at the McGinley Center on the university's Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx. The 2011 inductees join such Fordham greats as the aforementioned Lombardi, Frankie Frisch, Wellington Mara and Vin Scully in the Fordham athletics pantheon.  The inductees will be feted beginning at 11:00 am, prior to the Fordham vs. Richmond men’s basketball game (1:00 pm tip off) at the Rose Hill Gymnasium. Fordham President Fr. Joseph McShane, S.J. and Executive Director of Athletics Frank McLaughlin will preside. Brian Clark (FCRH '10), a product of WFUV radio, will serve as the Master of Ceremony at the brunch.

Kornegay (Trenton, NJ) contributed to the 2002 Patriot League winning Rams’ defense, and along with the offensive trio of Kirwin Watson, Javarus Dudley, and Kevin Eakin (all 2010 inductees), helped to spearhead Fordham’s climb to a Patriot League power for the first time since the school made the jump to the Patriot League in 1989.

Kornegay, a 2004 consensus All-American, was a finalist for the 2004 Buck Buchanan Award, presented to the NCAA I-AA Defensive Player of the Year and was one of 40 players named to the 2004 NCAA I-AA.org All-Star Team. He led the Patriot League and ranked second in the NCAA I-AA in interceptions as a senior, averaging 0.73/game and twice set the Fordham school record with three interceptions in a game that season.
He has played professionally for the past six year in the CFL, the last four with Saskatchewan following his trade from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Gellatly (Hopewell Junction, NY) was a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection as a senior in 2002 when she tied for fifth in the conference in goals scored and tied for tenth in total points. Over her career, she scored 33 career goals in three years, placing her second on the Fordham all-time scoring list, two behind fellow Hall of Famer Denise Corrado while her 73 career points is also second on the Fordham all-time list. In 2001, she also set a school record with 11 points in a single game against St. Peter's, while tying the single game goal mark with five tallies. Following her career, she joined the Fordham women's soccer coaching staff for two seasons from 2003 to 2004.

Nanne (Guatemala City), who transferred to Fordham prior to his junior year from the University of Guatemala, was a member of the lightweight 8 crew that won the 2002 Dad Vail Championship and 2003 ECAC National championship. In the summer after his junior year, he placed tenth in the World Championships in the lightweight single, one of only a handful of collegiate rowers to advance to the semifinals at the World Championships.

As a senior, Nanne won the lightweight 8 and heavyweight singles titles at the Central American and Caribbean Games in the fall and then captured the New York State championship in the varsity 8 boat. Following graduation he placed 17th in the World Championships in the lightweight single, one of the few collegiate rowers to advance to the semifinals at the World Championships, and won a bronze medal at the Pan Am Games, finishing ahead of an entry from the U.S.

Slater (Bronx, NY) fought through debilitating injuries suffered in a fire when he was a child to become one of the top runners at Fordham in the early 1960's. As a freshman he went undefeated on the 1960 freshman cross country team, setting ten course records and winning the Metropolitan IC4A championship.

During his sophomore year, Slater was voted MVP of the varsity cross country team and was a member of the second place IC4A Indoor Championship two mile relay. As a junior, he was a member of the two mile relay that recorded the fourth fastest indoor time in the world up to 1963 as well as a member of the NYAC Games record-setting relay. His injuries caught up to him his senior year as he missed most of the season.

Welsh (Trumbull, CT), who was named the 1986 Female Athlete of the Year by The Ram, won three straight MAAC diving titles from 1984-86. She set a conference record at the MAAC championships on the one-meter board as a junior in 1986 (406.55) while also placing second on the three-meter board, qualifying for the NCAA championships on the three-meter board. Welsh also captured the MET Championship title on both boards that year and was named Most Valuable Diver of the Meet.

Welsh graduated with school records on both the one and three meter board and still holds the one meter record for eleven dives, the longest standing women's swimming and diving record at Fordham.

The day will begin with a special mass at the University Church before the Hall of Famers and their guest arrive at the McGinley Center Ballroom for the formal induction ceremony.

Following the ceremony, the Hall of Famers will attend the Fordham-Richmond men's basketball game in the Rose Hill Gym at 1:00 p.m. with the new class being feted again at halftime.
