Valutivity Balances People & Process at Richmond VSCPA 2011 Nonprofit Conference

Feb. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- Mechanicsville, VA: Karen Smith-Will, of Hanover County consulting firm Valutivity LLC, spoke at the Nonprofit Conference for the Richmond Chapter of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) on January 25, 2011 at The Place in Glen Allen, Virginia. Her presentation, “People and Process in Non-Profits,” highlighted the need for nonprofit leaders to balance process improvement with awareness of people needs. Quoting Robert Greenleaf, Karen noted that “’True leadership emerges from those whose primary motivation is a deep desire to help others,’ and non-profits are in a unique position because their organizations exist for this sole purpose. Reducing waste enables nonprofits to invest even more in what they value most—helping people.” She highlighted Lean and Six Sigma concepts such as the DMAIC action cycle (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control), value stream analysis and waste reduction.

Karen joined a lineup of speakers that included the following: Phyllis Katz, who spoke on “Volunteer vs. Organization Liability,” Bill Stevens, who delivered the “Tax/Audit Update for Non-Profits,” and Jim Cole, who closed out the conference with “Gifts...To Accept or Reject, THAT is the Question.”

Attending the conference were both accounting professionals and a range of leaders representing nonprofits that varied from smaller community service organizations and churches to larger ones like the Richmond YMCA and the Virginia Special Olympics.
