The Lupus Magazine's Maddie Pearce talks to Salimah Mussani, an inspiring golfer who hasn't let lupus get in the way of following her dreams...

Growing up in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, Salimah Mussani began golfing around the age of twelve, and quickly at thirteen, she was already competing. Living in Canada, her seasons were limited to only three or four months out of the year. As well as being an avid golfer, she also played other sports including field hockey, where she competed at a national level.

Most sports that Salimah had been involved with were team sports, so she immediately fell in love with the individual responsibility that golf carried. She states that she was “in charge of her success” and she had time off in the summer, which she enjoyed. When she became aware that this sport didn’t come as easily to everyone else and realized that she was very good at it, it didn’t take long to decide that it would be a huge part of her life and future.

In early 1997, when Salimah was just eighteen years of age, she had her first brush with medical issues, as she was suffering from ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura), a condition in which the body struggles to make enough platelets. Eventually, her spleen was removed in August of 1997 and she was healthy. Or so she thought. Still feeling a run down and fatigued, doctors believed she was suffering from mono, and no one knew yet that it was Lupus.
