Feb. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- A number of dog owners have abandoned their faithful friends due to the rise in VAT. Dog owners claim they can no longer afford to look after their pets and some dog re-homing and abandonment centres have never been so busy. Indeed, it was not long for the first stray of the year to arrive at Battersea Dogs Home with a three-month-old terrier arriving on 1st January 2011. If you can no longer afford to care and look after your pet get in touch with your local animal home to see how they can help. They appreciate that everyone’s situation is different and much better you get some help rather than make your animal stray.

Shockingly, it is not only the levels of abandonment that has been in the news; a pet cat found in Mansfield was recently discovered having been sliced in half causing great devastation to the pet’s owner. Only the top part of the body was discovered and then taken to a local vet. Although a representative for the RSPCA said they could not confirm this was done deliberately, the vet who received the severed cat at his surgery confirmed another animal or car did not cause the injuries. Although this is a horrific case of animal cruelty, it should be remembered this is just one of many cases.

Although it is difficult to prove an owner has abandoned their pet anyone that is found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal can be fined twenty thousand pounds or face a maximum six month prison sentence. Many would argue these punishments are not harsh enough.
