Let’s recap: You’ve booked your flights, organized your hotel, sorted out your carry-on luggage, and packed your luggage. You’ve checked in via your cell phone, and you’re carefully monitoring your flight status so that you can keep an eye on whether or not your flight is delayed.
and, inevitably, it is. You find yourself in the airport with a few hours to kill — and Tecca’s here to help you sort out what you can do.

Are you flexible?
When you find out that your flight has been delayed (either via your phone or when you check in at the desk), have a chat with an airline representative. With a little creative traveling, it’s possible that you may still get to your destination on time, albeit via a creative route — and the airline will set you up with this service free of charge. If you’re happy enough to spend a while longer in the air rather than a little longer on the ground, this may be the way to go.

Priorities
If you’ve decided to stick around at the terminal, work out what your priorities are. Want to go spend the time window shopping or perusing the new best-sellers? Go for it! This is a great opportunity to grab some new entertainment for the plane — the latest magazine, a new CD, or even a new notebook and fancy pen. You will be paying airport prices, though, and remember that anything you buy, you’ll have to carry with you!

Chances are, if you’ve packed everything properly and are well prepared, you won’t need to buy anything else, and your time could be spent much better elsewhere. Where, though, is a good question. You may need to don your detective cap and do a little hunting around to find the best spot in the airport that suits your needs.

Wifi
Some airports offer free wifi for all guests. Others offer paid wifi for most guests but have free options for members of airport lounges like the Admirals Club or the Delta Sky Club. A nifty trick is to work out where these lounges are located within the terminal and find a spot to sit near them. As we know, wifi doesn’t respect walls — and if you can get close enough, you’ll be able to access the internet like a pro, without the annual membership fees.

Obviously, if you can’t find anywhere convenient near the lounge, you may be out of luck this time. Discretion is important — it’s no good to be “borrowing” the free wifi if you have to lean up against a doorframe to do it. A bit of hunting may even turn up a map showing you where the best free spots are.

Power
To avoid running your laptop batteries flat before you get on the plane, take a good look around the airport to find out where the power outlets are, and then work out if you can sit near them. Some gates will have conveniently placed outlets by the seats, while others will have none at all, so you may have to move to another area if power is important to you. I’ve seen desperate travelers plugged into walls halfway down a walkway, trying to recharge a flat laptop, but a little bit of exploration should find you a more comfortable solution.

Entertainment
Other than the aforementioned tacky best-sellers at the bookshop, waiting at the airport is a great opportunity to play some of those games you’ve downloaded to your mobile device but never actually tried. You likely won’t be able to use your phone on the plane, so battery life isn’t so much of an issue. Personally, I recommend Train Conductor, Angry Birds, and Plants vs. Zombies, but who could go past the irony of landing jumbo jets in Flight Control?
Comfort
Finally, if you have a long wait ahead and can’t find anything else to do, you might as well spend it in comfort. Head to one of the coffee shops (or a bar), order a refreshing beverage and a tasty snack, and then sit back and watch the people scurrying to and from their flights. Breathe a happy sigh and be thankful for the fact you’re not one of them!
