Tacoma, Washington Non-profit Literary Trust Established

Non-profit to support interest in speculative fiction, and the efforts of self published and small press authors.
Jan. 30, 2011 - PRLog -- Tacoma, Washington,

Tacoma author and literary activist Robert A. Boyd announces creation of The Written Wyrd, a Washington State nonprofit trust founded to support interest in speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, and horror), and the efforts of self published and small press authors.

Speculative fiction challenges the reader to think, and questions our presumptions about the world.  With billions spent these days to promote mindless conformity and political sheepthink, popular literature which encourages independent thought is more essential than ever.  But the major New York press has been losing ground for years due to their outmoded business models to the point where a new author breaking into the market has become all but impossible.

To fill this gap, many authors are turning to self publishing and the small press, working with Print On Demand and downloads to bypass the restrictions of traditional publishing.  However, this method has its own problems, notably lack of critical feedback in the writing process, credibility hurt by poorly written fanzine material, and publicity.

ABOUT THE WRITTEN WYRD, INC.

Launched in January 1, 2011, The Written Wyrd addresses these problems with a multi-phase program:

* Establishing a peer review process to council new authors on their work.

* Promoting works by placing free copies in libraries, schools, and public institutions.

* Creating a system of awards and certifications for quality work.

* Providing translations into other languages, thus promoting market penetration, especially overseas.

These efforts will be funded through sales of books, donations, and grants.

Participating works will be distributed through Lightning Source, Inc, a British based Print On Demand publisher with outlets all over the world.  US and Canadian distribution is through leading online retailers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and download versions will soon be available from the company web site.

Right now, the company is still organizing, and hopes to implement these programs throughout 2011.
