Menopausal women might bear the brunt of the US trillion dollar deficit. Their resilience, however, will help them cope if the worse should come.

I was amazed when I heard of the current US trillion dollar budget deficit. Deficit, shortfall, insufficiency, call it what you may. Trillions of dollars or the lack thereof, evokes great cause for concern. The anxiety regarding the deficit is about the enormous gap; the financial implications for the country, and the devastating impact it will have on humanity - and in particular, menopausal women, especially those who are sole providers of their households.

Most menopausal women are in their 40’s to 60’s.  Employment, for them, is more than just having a job. It’s the roof over their heads, the food on their tables, and the medications afforded through the health insurance that saves them from going crazy from miserable hot and cold flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and those weird feelings that only a woman who has experienced menopause in such fashion can appreciate.  

The menopausal woman therefore faces a dilemma when her job is threatened. She gets caught in a vicious cycle of menopausal anxiety, depression, hot and cold flashes, embarrassing sweating triggered not only by hormonal changes but by frequent constant reminders of her financial, medical, and social vulnerabilities. For example, her fears are heightened by the current US trillion-dollar deficit from awareness that women are targets for lay offs during shortfalls.  

And so, these thoughts and ideas, facts or fiction, trigger another cascade of menopausal signs and symptoms. “How does maturing woman cope with these mental, physical, social challenges, and potential brunt of the trillion dollar deficit?” Women are resilient in dealing with menopausal issues and stresses of daily living. For example, women expressed what helps: talking with extended family and friends; peer-group discussions in formal and informal settings at churches and work. Some have used exercise, diet watching, praying, meditating; or hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

Menopausal women might bear the brunt of the US trillion dollar deficit. Their resilience, however, will help them cope if the worse should come.
