New Materials market report from Business Monitor International: "South Africa Mining Report Q1 2011"

Jan. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- The conditions are set for the continued growth of South Africa's mining sector in 2011 when we expect the industry to grow by 4.3% year-on-year (y-o-y) in real terms and to reach a nominal value of US$36bn. The mining sector remains one of the main drivers of the South African economy and is forecast to contribute 8% to the country's GDP in 2011.

Our forecasts take into account a positive outlook for the global economy and for demand for minerals and metals which should help support prices of platinum, coal, iron ore and other major South African export products.

Key drivers are the three largest platinum group metals (PGM) producers, which account for 74% of global PGM production, these are: Anglo Platinum, Norilsk Nickel and Impala Platinum. These companies, which all operate in South Africa, have all recently posted increased profits and plan to expand production.

Anglo recently stated that PGM output increased by 11% y-o-y in Q310 to 637koz mainly through increased output at the Mogalakwena, Thembelani and Tumela mines. Anglo's production is therefore estimated to have surpassed 2.5moz in 2010, a 5% increase on 2009. Similarly Norilsk has announced that platinum output increased by 9% y-o-y in Q310 to 531koz, while palladium production rose by 8% yo- y to 2.2moz with annual output estimated to have reached 670koz of platinum and 2.8moz for palladium in 2010. Impala Platinum announced that platinum production rose by 2% y-o-y in Q310 to 1.7moz.

The BMI Q1 2011 mining report also provides forecast of real industry growth and production and export volumes up to an including 2015.

Meanwhile we are cautious of ongoing political and regulatory developments within the country's mining industry, which threaten to derail growth. The report highlights the concerns of foreign investors and of companies active in South Africa's mining sector, notably the likelihood of whether the increasing labour unrest witnessed across the sector in 2010 will continue into 2011. We also evaluate the potential threats of nationalisation as well as examining ongoing concerns surrounding fuel and energy shortages and what effects, if any, these will have on production levels.
