Jan. 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Every student of Biblical history knows that King David and his descendants ruled Israel at the time of the First Temple. After the First Temple was destroyed, Israel was exiled to Babylon and then Persia. Subsequently King Darius of Persia allowed the Jews to return to Israel and rebuild the Temple. Although it was rebuilt, the House of David was never reestablished. This was an important change in Jewish society and yet the historical event is never commented on, and  even most if not all Jewish scholars are unaware of precisely what happened.

According to Mitch, when the Israelites returned to their land they were under the protection and sway of the Persian King Darius. He considered himself to be ithe King of Israel and did not want a competing Jewish King to be reinging in his sted. He therefore forbid Israel from annointing a King. Prince Zerubabel of the House of David was allowed to participate in the rebuilding  the Temple, but was no more than a public spokesman or representative of King Darius..

According to Mitch there is some additional question as to whether Zerubabel could have been annointed, even if it had been permitted by the King of Persia. While listed as the son of King Shaltiel, the last King of the House of David, there is some evidence that Zerubabel was really the nephew or maybe grandson of the last King and thus not first in line to receive the throne. According to Mitch, it is most likely that the members of the House of David who were in line to become King ahead of Zerubabel were living in Babylon and did not return to Israel. This meant that the representative of the House of David living in Israel was not the first in line to be annointed King. Those who were first in line were living outside the land, and therefore, according to Jewish law could not be annointed Kings because a Jewish King can only be annointed in the land of Israel.

Nevertheless, the problem of succession could have been resolved and the real problem preventing the return of Jewish Monarchy at the time was the fact that Darius wanted to be the sole Kiing of Israel. .
