Free Hand Quilting Technique #1
Art Quilting Made Easy by Lesley Riley

All hand quilting enthusiasts can learn something from Lesley Riley’s free hand quilting technique. With a few simple tools, a little fabric, a desire to construct, and Lesley’s guidance, all quilters have the opportunity to create a small handmade quilt of their own design. Lesley goes into great detail about appliquéd quilts and whole cloth quilts. She explains the different techniques used for each style of quilt. Appliquéd quilts are made up of small pieces of fabric that are applied to a larger, background piece of fabric. In a whole cloth handmade quilt the emphasis is on the surface design of the fabric and/or the quilting stitches.

Painting with Thread: Stitching a Story by Ellen Scott

Making narrative handmade quilts is a very good way to learn how to quilt by hand. It’s handmade, handspun, and heartfelt. This style of homemade quilts is completely based on personal vision. There are not strict guidelines. Ellen suggests beginning with a preliminary drawing and from there incorporating special events, favorite things, or anything to make this handcrafted quilt personal. The step-by-step directions on how to properly bring a personal vision to life, along with a list of materials to use, are provided in this free hand quilting technique, but quilters can use whatever completes their own personal vision.

Free Hand Quilting Technique #3
Home Free: Collage Your Way to Design by Sylvia Naylor

Some quilters have the desire to work in a free way, with no guidelines or rules or instructions. Sylvia Naylor has created the perfect free hand quilting technique for those “free style” type of quilters. Sylvia begins her technique by making a paper collage of what inspires her. Starting with a paper collage frees up all designs and sparks the handcrafted quilt creative process in each quilter. Beginning with a paper collage, working spontaneously, and then making that paper collage into a fabric collage, is the process Sylvia explains in her technique.

Go Green: Eco-Friendly Journal Quilting Techniques by Natalya Aikens

Natalya Aikens has created a hand quilting technique that makes recycled materials look beautiful. Every week for a year Natalya made small handmade quilts. Each quilt was constructed with recycled materials. The guidelines that Natalya laid out are easy to follow. They are not discouraging, because there isn’t a huge amount of work, it is meant to be fun, lighthearted work. She gives many different options on how to finish the handmade quilted pieces; such as, decorative stitching, glues and adhesives, acrylic and fabric paints, frayed edges and much more.

Fusing 101 by Laura Wasilowski

In this easy, self-directed hand quilting technique, quilters will learn the fine art of fusing in a fun and amusing fashion. Fusing is the transfer of fusible web (a dry glue) to fabric by means of an iron. Once the web is transferred to the fabric it can be cut into any shape and re-fused to another fabric. It is a fast, easy way to create fabric artwork.
