Young College Graduates Create Their Own Jobs

Jan. 25, 2011 - PRLog -- The economic crises has affected jobs for many Americans since its start in 2008. College graduates have been no exception to this trend. Last May, according to a USA Today article, "Fewer than half of employers — 44% — plan(ed) to hire recent college grads in 2010, according to a CareerBuilder survey. That's about the same as last year but down from 58% in 2008 and 79% in 2007."

However, many graduates decided to take their futures into their own hands. "Some college graduates, unable to find satisfying full time employment, have chosen to start their own businesses" explains Benjamin Shore, who graduated with a degree in General Business from the University of Maryland in College Park, MD in May 2010. He continues, "I had an extremely difficult time even getting interviews and I did not get offers from the interviews that I did have."

After remaining unemployed for several months, Benjamin decided to start his own company. He says that "I had dreamed of starting a company for years but I never seriously considered it as a possibility when I graduated. But when I couldn't get a job, it became more realistic every day. I decided to start a longevity nutrition company to reflect my life long interest in health and longevity. One of my close friends also started a company."

When asked how he has fared since starting his company, he replied, "Well, I think it is extremely difficult to build a successful business overnight, but I am optimistic about the company's future."

Benjamin also reflected on the economic recession. He mused "I am happy that I couldn't find a job. Only after starting a business did I realize that I could never have been completely happy with an entry level position. Perhaps I think too highly of myself but I believe that I am capable of much more."
