What the homeowners said:

“In the process of designing the interior of our penthouse in Longboat Key, Florida, we chose Jan Michelle Interiors for the overall vision reflecting the modern sensibility that we were trying to achieve. Jan Michelle was willing to step in and provide a younger, fresher and more sophisticated space. She worked with what had been done so far (with previous designers) and was able to bring the lighter, airier feel to the rooms. Jan Michelle understood the level of sophistication that was appropriate for this home, while making it livable and comforting, as a beach escape should be, as well. We were very pleased with the uniqueness of certain items of furniture, accessories, and art work that were chosen as well.”

Sunset Inspiration

In Atlanta, the homeowners residence is a classic traditional design, including heavy fabrication and even antique pieces. This is consistent with the brick traditional exterior of the house. But the homeowners knew they wanted to go in a completely different direction at the beach. After consulting with them, Jan Michelle felt they wanted to keep the penthouse looking airy and light, yet maintain a certain sophistication worthy of the elegance of the space.

“Often designers use the sea as their inspiration for colors used in residences by the ocean.  But in this case, I knew of the famous sunsets of the area.  They are quite beautiful and the colors can be vibrant depending on the cloud formations at the time.  But almost always they include the beautiful glow of persimmon. That hue was my inspiration for the draperies for the main living area,” says Jan Michelle.

During sunset, the drapes act as a frame for the sunset over the ocean (this can be seen in one of the dining room pictures).  Then we stayed with sandy colors for much of the other fabrics.

“I pushed the homeowners a little out of their comfort zone and proposed a more contemporary interior compared to their other properties.  In the end, they are happy to have a home that is so different from their others,” explains Jan Michelle.
