If you are serious about helping yourself or others recover from alcoholism, here is a checklist to assist you in your path to recovery.

First, accept all responsibility for the past, present, and future. Recovery will only be successful if the recovering alcoholic really wants to recover.

Expect accountability. In short, this means, accepting responsibility for your own actions. It is a well known fact that behind every alcoholic, there are people that contributed to enabling your drinking habit. By accepting responsibility for your own actions, you will continue to stay sober.

Find a support group. Most recovering alcoholics require a professional support group. Moreover, these support groups will also have former alcoholics who understand what it's like to live with alcoholism. For this reason, most alcoholics choose to start their recovering process this way. Also, support groups are free to attend, should you need help and assistance in your recovery process.

Attend group meetings. Group meetings are similar to support groups. However, they contribute greatly to the ongoing healing and recovery process. Group meetings also help recovering alcoholics from relapse.

Live in an alcohol free environment. Recovering alcoholics should not be around environments where alcohol is present and/or freely available. Remember, the recovery process is not easy, and should a recovering alcoholic find himself or herself in such an environment, the struggle can more easily start again.

There are times when alcohol abuse statistics just aren't enough to assist a person in recovering from alcoholism. Although alcohol abuse statistics can be of great help, there are many other things that could help yourself or others recover from alcoholism.
