Jan. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Already picked to play as part of HMV’s Next Big Thing, UK and European tours in the diary and a film sync in the bag 2011 is going to be a big year for Mike Marlin and the Whethermen. Debut album ‘Nearly Man’ launches on February 16th with a showcase at London’s Gibson Guitar Studios.

"I am the Nearly Man. I got paid for my bad behaviour and wasted years fixing the holes in the sides of my alibis. I'm looking out for happiness, I guess, though I'm certainly guilty of crimes. We are just passing through, but at least I know the difference between true love and sin. I've got machines to get things done."

Mike Marlin was born in Wimbledon in the swinging 60’s, grew up to earn a scholarship studying physics at Oxford then dropped out to pursue a passion for music, girls and computers. More inspired by post-punk British pop such as Costello and Weller, Mike armed himself with a guitar and 4-track cassette machine and withdrew into a world of his own, venturing out only to play bass in bands that never made it.

“There is no comparison between playing bass in a band and being the front man. You may be only four feet away in terms of where you’re standing but it’s a hundred million miles away.”

Jump 25 years and Mike is ready to release his debut album ‘Nearly Man’ on the world. Written over the last 18 months and produced by James Durrant the record resonates with just the right amount of nostalgia for the artists that Marlin grew up with. It sounds just as ‘now’ as it does ‘then’ and his band The Whethermen provide consistently solid grooves for Mike’s trademark baritone vocals to cut into.

As the pace of the album charges and breathes, Mike’s lyrics expose a candid honesty that is connecting directly with audiences from all walks of life and fast growing his fanbase across the UK. Evocative of everything from Blur to Bowie and with lyrical relevance to everyone, or perhaps nobody, these songs sound as good on stage as they do on record and even a cursory glance on Mike’s youtube channel will reveal an inspired approach to music videos featuring anything from disco dwarves to full blown office destruction. Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the world of Mike Marlin...

"My biggest disadvantage is that I don't have a catalogue of hits from back in the day. But that's also an advantage. I would love to have a musical past but I would hate to live in it."
