Jan. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- Rockaway, NJ - AL Systems, a leading provider of Warehouse Control System and Order Fulfillment solutions, just concluded a successful webinar titled Pick to Light vs. Voice Picking. The webinar was attended by over 50 supply chain and distribution executives who were eager to learn how to determine the right Order Fulfillment solution to optimize their distribution centers.

The goal of this webinar was to help companies take an objective view of their distribution centers, mainly because providers of voice-directed picking technology claim that voice is the best solution because it improves productivity and accuracy for a reasonably low investment and providers of light-directed picking technology explain that light technology is the best solution because it improves accuracy to the same degree as voice, but increases productivity to a much greater degree. The key take away from this webinar was that both technologies are “best” only depending on the application, atleast when “best” is measured in terms of productivity, accuracy and return on investment. Voice Picking is best suited in Low Reach Density environments, meaning few reaches per unit of travel, typically found in applications where a large number of SKUs are spread throughout the distribution center and each SKU is not often picked from; whereas, Pick to Light is best suited in High Reach Density environments, meaning many reaches per unit of travel, typically found in applications with a small number of SKUs that are each very often picked from. Therefore, before selecting an Order Fulfillment technology, it is import to analyze your volume and SKUs to determine if it is High Reach Density, Low Reach Density or Mixed Density.

In closing, Jim Iversen, CEO, AL Systems said “We want to bring together thought leaders to collaborate and share knowledge around the issues and opportunities facing our businesses today. Our goal is to create a stimulus to get productive thoughts flowing resulting in education and idea exchange.”
